What is George Street Playhouse?

George Street Playhouse is a fully professional, nationally-recognized Regional theatre located in New Brunswick, NJ.  We are a producing theatre, in which sets, costumes, props and all other production elements are built from scratch on our premises.  George Street Playhouse produces five mainstage productions over the course of its season, which generally starts in late September or early October and runs through the Spring. 

Where is George Street Playhouse?

We are located in the heart of New Brunswick’s dining and entertainment district, mere footsteps away from some of the finest dining establishments in the region.  Whatever your taste or budget, New Brunswick has an eatery for you!  We are also accessible by car (off of Exit 9 on the New Jersey Turnpike), train (the Northeast Corridor Line on NJ Transit) or bus.  Click here for detailed directions to the Playhouse.  Click here for recommendations for area restaurants.

How much do tickets cost?

Individual tickets are priced depending on your seat location and the night of the week you attend.  A $3.00 facility fee and service charge are added to each ticket purchased.  Click here for current pricing and seat availability

When are your performances?

George Street Playhouse generally offers eight performances a week, running Tuesday through Sunday.  Evening performances start at 8pm, except for Sunday evenings which begin at 7pm.  Matinees, offered on select Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, begin at 2pm.  It is always best to check this website, or contact our Box Office 732-246-7717 to verify the performance schedule as it is subject to change.

How do I purchase a ticket?

You can purchase a ticket in one of three ways:  in person, by phone, or via our website.   Our box office is located at 9 Livingston Avenue if you wish to purchase in person, click here for box office hours of operation.  You may call the Box Office at 732-246-7717 to order tickets by phone.  We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover Cards.  Click here to purchase tickets

That is great that I can buy tickets online.  Is it safe?

Our website encrypts all data between your computer and our website so that it cannot be read over the internet.  Our website is audited yearly to ensure it meets with the rigorous standards of the industry.

When will I receive my tickets?

If the date of your performance is five days or less, your tickets will be held for you at our Box Office.  At all other times, you have the option of receiving your tickets in the mail, or having them held at the Box Office.  Orders are processed within 24 hours of their receipt in the Box Office. 

If it is not possible for me to attend the performance, can I exchange my tickets?

Ticket exchanges may be made by phone, mail or in person at any time prior to the date and time printed on your ticket.  However, tickets may not be exchanged from one show to another.  Please note that there may be an upgrade fee if you exchange to a more expensive performance; i.e. from a Tuesday to a Friday.  There is no service fee for the exchange of a subscription ticket; however, all single ticket purchase carry a $5 per ticket exchange fee.

We are unable to exchange tickets at the window within the half hour prior to a performance.

I’ve lost my ticket!  Can I still come to the show?

Yes – just contact our Box Office and they will reprint your ticket and hold it at the Box Office for you.

I would like to bring my child to a performance.  What ages are appropriate?

Age appropriateness varies with each production.  Contact our Box Office staff at 732-246-7717 or email boxoffice@georgestplayhouse.org to verify what is the best age for the show you wish to attend.  Babies and children who are not old enough to occupy a seat will not be permitted in the theatre.

Does George Street Playhouse offer subscriptions?

Yes!  You may subscribe to the Playhouse in a number of ways, and come as often as you wish to the Playhouse at a greatly reduced cost – and with benefits available only to a subscriber.   For further information, please visit our subscriptions page.

Where do you recommend I park?

For those patrons attending weekday matinees, parking can be a challenge, so we definitely recommend leaving a little extra time for those performances.  Click here for available parking near the Playhouse.

Is George Street Playhouse handicapped-accessible?

Yes.  We have a ramp that accesses the theatre space directly from the outside for those who have difficulty with steps.  We also offer audio-described performances for patrons who are visually impaired, as well as large print and Braille playbills.  We also offer open-captioned performances for those patrons who are hearing impaired.  Assistive listening devices are provided free of charge at every performance upon request.

How long are the performances?

Each play’s length varies, and if running time is a concern for you, we recommend contacting our Box Office at 732-246-7717 to inquire as to the running time of the show you are about to see.  This information is also posted in our outer lobby, just to the left as you are entering the main lobby.

What should I wear to the show?

You should wear whatever you are comfortable in.  Some patrons like to come “dressed up” to the theatre, others prefer more comfortable attire.  There is no dress code; however, do be aware that due to the eccentricities of our heating and cooling systems, temperatures can vary widely, so it’s best to bring layers that you can either put on or take off.

May I bring a camera to the show?

Due to Actors Equity and copyright regulations, ANY kind of recording – audio or visual – is strictly prohibited, and camera or recorders are subject to confiscation.

Do you have a lost and found?

Yes.  Our house manager maintains our lost and found.  You may contact the house management office at 732-846-2895, ext. 135 or by email at house.manager@georgestplayhouse.org.

What is George Street Playhouse’s inclement weather policy?

Time permitting, we will notify our patrons by phone if we are forced to cancel a show due to inclement weather.  Our box office is open up until  30 minutes prior to curtain time, so if you are at all in doubt as to whether “the show will go on,”  do call the Box Office at 732-246-7717.

Is it possible to audition to be in a show at George Street Playhouse?

George Street Playhouse casts its actors in accordance with the rules and regulations of Actors Equity, the Union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States.  We very rarely use non-Union actors.  For members of Actors Equity, George Street Playhouse runs an open call prior to the start of each season, both in Manhattan and in New Brunswick.  Non-union actors will be seen at those auditions as time allows.

I have a script that would be perfect for George Street!  Where can I send it?

Unfortunately, George Street Playhouse does not accept unsolicited scripts for our Mainstage, Next Stage Festival, or our educational touring productions.

Does George Street Playhouse offer volunteer opportunities?

Very definitely yes!  Our usher corp is all volunteers, and we often enlist the help of volunteers for various tasks and events during the course of our season.  For information on volunteering at George Street Playhouse, email our volunteer coordinator: volunteer@georgestplayhouse.org.

Does George Street Playhouse offer programs or classes for children?

George Street Playhouse maintains a very active Academy, which offers classes for children, teens and adults, as well an extensive Summer program.  Click here for further information on our education page.

I’ve heard that George Street Playhouse donates tickets for charitable causes and events. How do I go about requesting a donation?

First off, you need to be a 501(c)3 Charitable Organization in order to be considered. As of September 1, 2010 our donation request processing will be
moving online ONLY. Please click here to submit your request.

Typically the Playhouse will donate two vouchers for a mainstage production, valued at $100.

Each request is reviewed and an email indicating approval or denial will be sent. Please allow 2-3 weeks for processing of your request. Requests received less than one week before the event will not be considered.
